At the end of the study, there was a significant improvement in the pulmonary hemodynamics in the sildenafil group, compared with the untreated control group. Sildenafil and placebo treatment were similar in terms of the number of pulmonary capillary beds, pulmonary artery pressures, and pulmonary capillary pressures.
Sildenafil (Viagra®) is currently approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is characterized by hypertension in the right side of the heart (RASH). The FDA previously approved sildenafil for the treatment of PAH in patients 2 years and older.

The effect of sildenafil on the hemodynamic response to exercise on the pulmonary hemodynamics test was also studied. Sildenafil (100 mg, four times daily) improved the hemodynamic response to exercise in patients with PAH (mean change from baseline: -0.23; 95% CI, -0.26 to -0.04; P<0.0001).
In patients with PAH, the study showed a significant improvement in the pulmonary hemodynamics in the sildenafil group compared with the untreated control group.
